Nestled in Australia’s winter wonderland of the Snowy Mountains, the Blue Lake is a thousand-year-old natural wonder.

Blue Lake

Developed by glacial erosion, when glaciers swept through the Great Dividing Range, and eroded the granite bedrock. The Lake is shaped like an amphitheatre and is one of the only four cirque lakes in mainland Australia.

Its Importance

The Blue Lake is located in the west of Jindabyne of the Snowy Mountains. It is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, listed under the Wetland of International Importance since 1996. It holds immense biological significance, as it has large numbers of threatened flora and fauna living within the region. These include the mountain pygmy
possum as well as the small broad-toothed mouse. The Lake is continually used for environmental education, with scientists researching the ecosystems and the biological diversity surrounding the lake.

How to Get There

Head to Charlotte Pass, Australia’s highest village, to begin your journey in this located at the end of Kosciuszko Road from Jinadabyne. As there is no public transport in the region, its best to come via car. Once you drive into the entrance of Kosciuszko National Park, you must pay a small fee. The entrance to Blue Lake is located at the end of the Village road, so visitors can park their cars along the side of the main road above the village.

The Blue Lake Walk

If you are up for a long hike around the region, you can hop on the Blue Lake’s 10-km return walk. Which showcases the snow gums of the alpine eucalyptus forest as well as the sapphire blue lake. Beginning at the small ski resort of Charlotte Pass, you can head around this looping walking trail to truly immerse yourself in the snowy terrain. Taking up to four hours return, passing over the famous Snowy River, through the Main Range Track, and showcasing the stunning glacial scenery. Alternatively walk along the loop hike nearby, which takes you into Mt Kosciuszko, which is known as Australia’s highest mountain.
