Hunter Valley is famous for producing tantalising tasting wines for both Australia and beyond. With smorgasbord vineyards and wineries set on the valley’s green fields and hills, the area is home to some of the country’s best wine brands. But how many brands are there exactly?
How many are there?
There are exactly a hundred and fifty wineries spread out across the Hunter Valley area. With a range of winery varieties to satisfy any kind of traveller. With big brand wineries that produce hundreds among thousands of bottles each month. Here you can learn how these companies climbed up the ladder of success, with traditional and modern style winemaking used. Otherwise, if you’d rather avoid the foot traffic, there are a number of boutique and family-owned wineries available.
Hunter Valley’s History
The birth of Hunter Valley’s vineyards began back in the 1820s. The initial vineyards struggled, and it wasn’t until 500 different vine cuttings taken from Europe were used to produce the vineyards did the valley grow. Quality increased, and the wines used their European core to produce the best wines in Australia.
Noteworthy Wineries to Visit
Iron Gate Estate
What’s interesting about this winery is that its creator was, in fact, an engineer who was a self-taught winemaker. Because of this, the winemaking process is completely technically and uses influences of both the Mediterranean province and his past engineering practises. The building itself is stunning and convinces you, you’ve skipped with flight and landed straight in Europe without any fuss.
Ernest Hill
A boutique winery for a quiet break from the crowds. Nestled on top of a stunning green hill, with the area is enchanting and charming, welcoming visitors with open arms. It is a family-owned winery, so each and every staff member is passionate and more than happy to any every question you have.
McGuigan Wines
It is one of the most popular wineries in the area, and for good reason. McGuigan wines blend together traditional methods and modern styles to create a completely unique taste of wine. It has been so successful; it has even won the International Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London.
Savannah
Savannah has some of the best views as well as wines in the Valley, as it is the gateway to Mount View. This is also a familied owned winery, with the brand named after the owner’s granddaughter. It has a sweet, friendly nature that charms many visitors to its doors. As well, as they are a less known brand, their bottles are a great and unique present for your friends and family.
