Australian Travel Guide gives the low down on everything about Australia, from travel tips to the best places to eat or drink. In this blog we focus on Canberra and look at what restaurants are the best in the capital.
As would be expected from the capital city of any country, Canberra has a plethora of different types of eateries for tourists and government workers. From French Bistro to modern Australian cuisine there is something for everybody.
Aubergine
The owner and chief chef at Aubergine, Ben Willis has created a modern masterpiece in Barker Street in Canberra. Caprezio Copeland has designed a modern dining experience with sleek monochrome decor, and ceiling-to-floor sheer curtains.
There is a delightful four-course fixed menu that will not break the bank and highlights the local produce of the area.
Bar Rochford
Located in a famous old Canberra building, the Melbourne Building, is this most atmospheric masterpiece of a bar / restaurant. This wine and cocktail bar is also about fine foods and features some of Australia’s most exciting wine producers.
The menu is constantly being updated so patrons keep coming back on a regular basis to enjoy what is seasonal and local.
The Boat House
Looking for something a little bit less formal, then make your way over to the Boat House. The recent renovation has transformed this diner from a tired function room to a great low budget diner.
Casual wooden chairs and stools are perfect for sipping a beer or enjoying a bistro-type meal. But don’t expect sausage and chips, think more of confit of salmon as an entree.
Courgette
Getting out of the city, Courgette is a welcome treat by the water. This restaurant has a large business clientele and it is not hard to see why. Making your way on the wooden path to the front door the restaurant oozes charm and charisma.
And when you are inside the food does not disappoint either, French cuisine at its finest with a slight modern Australian twist. There is also plush carpets and luxurious decor, so expect prices to reflect all this glamour.
Eightysix
Eightsix is a bit of a mixture, from the outside it looks like a fine dining restaurant, but inside the tables have no cloths and the menu is featured on blackboards on the wall.
The eatery is in the form of a large L-Shape and this place is a hip inner-city diner. The food is not your standard Australian fare, focusing like the wine list more on the European side of things. Expect a fun filled night, slightly loud but a great ambience.
These are just some of the great restaurants that you can partake of when visiting Canberra, keep abreast of our constantly updated blog pages to find other great dining experiences in Australia’s capital.
