Darwin is the tropical capital city of the Northern Territory and is unlike any other city in Australia.
It is home to several unique factors that differentiate it from anywhere else. Darwin’s climate, diversity, and landscapes are just a few reasons why it is considered to be so special.
Cultural diversity
Darwin is known for its multiculturalism, as it is home to more than 60 different nationalities. This is evident with the amount of cultural festivals and weekly food and craft markets that take place in Darwin every day. The close proximity to Asia has resulted in a large influence from all things cultural to food inspired from nearby Asian countries. Darwin is the perfect place to indulge your tastebuds with all kinds of foods. Famous local produce includes, barramundi, mud crab, lemon myrtle, Kakadu plum, and green ants.
Tropical climate
Most Australian capital cities have the four standard weather seasons. However, as the climate of Darwin is tropical, it is split into two distinct seasons, the wet and the dry seasons. The best time of the year to visit Darwin is most definitely in the dry season between May to October, that is when the city is alive with famous events such as the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, Darwin Street Art Festival, and the Darwin Fringe Festival.
Crocodiles
You simply cannot visit Darwin and not head out on a crocodile viewing cruise along the Adelaide River. The exhilarating feeling of seeing these giant creatures leap from the water is like nothing else in Australia. These prehistoric animals can reach up to 70metres in length and weigh up to 1 tonne! You cannot fathom their size until you get within an arms length of them on a crocodile cruise.
Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks
Darwin is the real Australian outback, and you have to experience the beauty of Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks on your adventure. Immerse yourself in the outback that has been stood still in time for over 60,000 years. Explore huge termite mounds, swim in freshwater streams, waterfalls, and admire the views on many of the stunning hiking trails. Visit the Aboriginal Cultural Centre and learn the fascinating history of the native Aborigines who once lived in harmony for thousands of years before colonisation.
